[this was written in September and I forgot to post it! I just found it; so, I am posting it now...yes, blog fail.]
About three weeks ago, after returning from a weekend away (without the boys), I found both the boys complaining about their ankles hurting. While I was gone, Dan bought each of them elastic braces to wear on their ankles to help until whatever got hurt healed.
Time passed (2 weeks) and Max continued to complain about his foot hurting (I, all along, thought it was his ankle), until I finally decided to take him in to see a doctor. Lo and behold, when we finally saw him Max said it was the bottom of his foot that hurt, not the ankle. They x-rayed his foot and found a hairline fracture in the small bone at his heel. He is now wearing an orthopaedic boot for a week in hopes that it will give the heel time to heal (no pun intended).
A week passed and this week Desmond says that his ankle hurts, too. Des tends to feel left out when other receive attention, so I just figured this was his way of fitting in. We let him wear his elastic brace thinking that would get the desire for attention out of his system. This week, 3 weeks after he began complaining, Dan suggested I take him to see the doctor, too. So, this morning after taking Max to school, I took Des to the doctor to find out that yes, he has a sprained ankle. Because of his continued sports activities (football practice and games, skateboard, bicycle riding, etc), it never healed. The doctor didn't think Des would stay off the foot long enough for it to heal, so he put on a splint and put him on crutches.
Yep, here I am, bad mommy with two boys hobbling around.
[as an update: they both survived, healed, and are back on two feet]
